From humble beginnings…
Peregian Beach is unique, this is a community by the people for the people and visitors are soon discovering this gem located just a short drive from the tourism mecca of Noosa Heads. Locals love the laid-back lifestyle of Peregian Beach with its cool cafes, fresh sea air and tropical vibe. This is the place to come when you want to kick off your shoes and let the kids run free in the sprawling beachside park.
The creation of this town was almost by accident and it’s this casual approach to town planning that formed the foundation of this unique village. When construction began on the Peregian Beach site, no formal town plan was in place resulting in roads simply being built along the easiest route. The land on either side was divided into lots and the lucky first residents began to build their new coastal homes. The first home was built in 1960 along Pelican Street and still stands today, although beautifully renovated to maximise the prime location and sweeping views over the beach. The original owner has often recalled visions of emus running freely down the beach hinting at the source of this town’s name – Peregian is thought to be an indigenous word meaning emu.
Peregian locals have managed to keep over-development at bay, resulting in a uniquely village-style community. Look around and you will see there are no high-rise buildings or hotels encroaching on the dunes; just low-set homes and relaxed community spaces ready for the whole family to enjoy. In the early days, there was a caravan park with tennis courts and a sports oval, along with a community pool that sat right where the village green is today. This was a community hub designed for those who wanted to feel the sand between their toes and the sun on their faces; and it still is today. Throughout its short history, Peregian Beach has always been a shining example of community spirit. The community banded together to create the first kindergarten, the local bush fire brigade and bowls club, along with volunteer groups who helped regenerate the dunes and swamp lands.
Today, Peregian Beach is a unique oceanside town loved by locals and visitors for its vibrant, laid-back vibe.
